Corpus Christi drivers love trucks, but there is always a fair share of traffic to contend with.

While many believe, as a blanket statement, "if a pickup truck crashes into a wall, the truck wins," recent collision tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) have shown that these powerful-looking machines offer less protection in crashes than you might think.

The trouble lies in the small-overlap crash. Most head-on collisions are nothing like crashing directly into a wall with the full width of the truck -- usually, somebody drifts just slightly over the yellow center line, and clips the driver's side.

In many vehicles, even rugged pickups, these off-set collisions bypass the safety features, and can be devastating.

Out of 10 models tested by the IIHS, only the Ford F-150 earned the highest safety rating for small-overlap collisions, and earned a Top Safety Pick (SuperCab and SuperCrew body styles).

This may come as a surprise to many, who expected the truck's switch from steel body panels to lightweight aluminum might impact safety. It seems the only real impact aluminum has, other than shaving off hundreds of pounds, is the need to find a reputable collision repair center that will work with aluminum.
